The Six-Week Postpartum Check: Questions Most Women Don't Know to Ask

The six-week postpartum appointment matters, but in practice it is often short and focused on the incision and contraception. Several things with long-term consequences go undiscussed simply because nobody raises them.

What to ask to have checked. A pelvic floor assessment — can the muscle contract, and how strongly? That single piece of information determines which exercises are appropriate and when to begin. Then an abdominal separation check, which determines which movements are safe for you specifically.

Questions worth asking outright. Is the leaking I still have normal at this stage, and by when should it have resolved? What should I do about a perineal or caesarean scar that is still sore? When can I resume sex, and what should I do if it hurts? When is it safe to return to running or lifting?

What you should not accept as simply normal: leaking that persists beyond three months, a sensation of heaviness or a bulge in the vagina, and pain during sex that is not improving. All three are treatable, and outcomes are consistently better when treatment starts early rather than after years of waiting.
